As quiet as possible, Owen sneaked out of the house at three in the morning. He tried to smile at Joey the gate guard, but failed utterly. Fortunately, Joey knew that all wasn’t well with Brendan, so he was expecting a few tears here and there.

He made a point of leaving his car in a visible location in long-term parking at the airport. He’d paid for his plane ticket on his debit card, so it would be especially easy to trace if it came to that. Hell, he’d left an airline itinerary on his desk, as though forgotten in haste.

He’d left so many things behind, and not just most of his clothes and books. The only personal keepsake he’d taken was a picture of his family. His mother and father were standing together, with Keegan between, and she was very obviously pregnant. It was the only family photo that existed with all four of them in it. He’d kept it on his nightstand since Keegan had given it to him for his birthday more than a decade earlier. It was the one object he wasn’t willing to leave behind, if there was a chance he was never coming back.

He tried not to think about that. About never seeing Keegan again. About not being there when his brother inevitably married his FBI agent and adopted a pack of children. About not being around to help his father get healthy again, despite the constant arguments that would surely ensue.

All he had room for in his head at that moment was a future that included a whole and happy Mickey Martin. That was the only thing that mattered.
